Jeff Cavins - How To Become A Modern Day Disciple - IHM Conference Notes
Jeff Cavins was a new-to-me speaker that I found to be one of the best I have ever heard at IHM National Catholic Parenting & Homeschool Conference. He spoke on
How to Become a Modern Day Disciple and here are a few bullet notes.
* Do you want to be a fan or a follower?
* If you only wish that your kids remain Catholic, that’s a shallow goal.
* To be disciples, you need to be a dynamic follower and there’s a difference between following and studying. You can read all the photography books but at some point you have to take a shot.
James 1:22 But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.
* When Rabbis questioned disciples and would ask, for instance, “What’s 2+2?” They did not expect, nor want, the answer “4.” The disciple needed to prove deeper understanding and so would answer, “8-4” or “the square root of 16.” Situational awareness.
* Oprah, Ellen, Rush Limbaugh all have their worldview, but we need the worldview of Jesus. What does Jesus say about life? What does Jesus say about the Eucharist?
CCC 236 God's works reveal who he is in himself; the mystery of his inmost being enlightens our understanding of all his works. So it is, analogously, among human persons. A person discloses himself in his actions, and the better we know a person, the better we understand his actions.
* Know His plan, trust the roadmap
* Ask what does a Catholic look like, what would they say?
* In a survey, many responded that they had never seen their parents hold a Bible in their hands.
* Disciples put into practice what they learn.
