Madonna of the Mountains

During the severe mountain winter, the Madonna, buffeted by strong winds, walks barefoot through the snow. The bears and birds seek shelter near the Madonna. In her basket, she carries two little bears for her Son.
Jerzy Harasymowicz, Slowackie wspomnienie

The viewer immediately notices the Madonna's bare feet in the snow. Her bare feet are in strong contrast to the crown of precious jewels on her head. Even though Mary is Queen, she is in solidarity with all creation. Like the animals, she walks barefoot. Like the Goraly, the mountain people, she experiences the hardships of life in the Polish mountains during the frigid winter weather. Her expression is one of determination. Like the mountaineers, she will overcome all the trials caused by nature.

Imagining Our Lady in my Snowmaggedoned, blustery backyard...

Absolutely beautiful picture! I love winter, but know that 20 inches at once is a burden. Hope you remain with power & phone service throughout the storm.

I have never seen this beautiful image of Our Lady. My husband's father is first generation Polish-American. I cannot wait to show my children this picture tomorrow! (I am Irish-Italian, so you can imagine how lively our home can be!) Peace

My 14 year old son took the burden, Suzie and we're shovelled out. Hope he's not too sore tomorrow. It's amazing how hard, physical labor seems to be needed at this age. He never quit, so he must have been enjoying the accomplishment.

Annita - I have that Irish and Italian mix in me too. VERY lively combo. :)
